Did you know that you could use RealityScan to document archaeological sites in 3D for free?

Metal Detecting / DIME - Danish Online Metal Det...

I find the Danish DIME metal detection find reporting scheme exemplary and wish other countries - i.e. Austria and Germany - would have a similar approach.

GPR / Re: Oerad Scudo
Last post by Benny Rieger - Jun 02, 2026, 04:22 PM
I had this 500 Mhz units several years ago, too. Back then under the name Easyrad. I made an animated 3D-Model of the 500 Mhz unit for promotion about 10 years ago and get a unit in return from the manufacturer (he is a very nice guy). I built a cart (modified Buggy) and a sled with a modified odometer for it back then (see attached images). I also have some old data and experimented with the odometer (if you are interested). These units are not that bad for certain tasks. But I dont have them anymore.

Introduce yourself / Scott Chaussée
Last post by S.M.Chaussee - Jun 02, 2026, 12:37 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm Scott Chaussée, a marine geophysicist and consultant at Wessex Archaeology. Despite marine being my day job, I am by academic training (Southampton University and University College London) and professional experience a terrestrial geophysicist at heart and try to maintain my own portfolio of independent research when I can. I'm also  licensed UAV pilot so am watching the flown acquisition developments with considerable interest. The particular applications we're finding so far are unsurprisingly the intertidal zones that neither vessel nor cart can reach. We've had good success processing and interpreting these data.

Data processing software / Re: RGPR
Last post by S.M.Chaussee - Jun 02, 2026, 12:30 PM
I've had some interactions with Emanuel, the developer of RGPR. He's really responsive despite being busy. I used R for quantitative analyses for my PhD so I was really pleased to find the RGPR package. I'm currently working on a Shiny web app to produce a graphical interface for the functions and it's going fairly well!

GPR / Oerad Scudo
Last post by S.M.Chaussee - Jun 02, 2026, 12:28 PM
I recently purchased a secondhand Oerad Scudo 500mhz antenna. They are manufactured in Bulgaria and I've had some success with an official dealer also in Sofia to liaise with the manufacturer for a replacement part. The acquisition software isn't the most full-featured and it's not RTK enabled (though I'm working on an experiment for that). I've taken it on two surveys and it's performed admirably. I'll eventually follow up this post with a data example.

Commercial Service Providers / Wessex Archaeology

Wessex Archaeology provide Terrestrial Geophysical surveys and Marine geophysical data assessment in the UK. Also in continental Europe via the sister company, Trident Archäologie. Full disclosure, I work in the Marine Services team at Wessex!

I'll definitely give it a read - the company I work for (Wessex Archaeology) did some flown GPR but those results aren't out yet. Not sure if they are planning to publish that too, but we're getting more and more flown mag and I think GPR will follow.
